Electron Microscope Observations on Tingible Body Macrophages in Mouse Spleen

چکیده
It is generally accepted that the tingible bodies (Körper) of Flemming (7) found in lymphatic tissue germinal centers represent phagocytized nuclear debris of small lymphocytes (1, 2, 6, 7, 11, and others) or both lymphocyte and erythrocyte debris (15) . Several ideas about the significance of tingible bodies assume that they are small lymphocytes . The "graveyard theory" emphasizes the phagocytosis of pyknotic small lymphocytes (6, 9, 11) . This theory was extended by Hamilton (8), Trowell (17), and Sundberg (16) who postulated reutilization of small lymphocytes in lymphocytopoiesis . Andrew (1) stressed the role of degeneration and phagocytosis of small lymphocytes in germinal centers as indicating that these centers are not germinal but reactive, as proposed by Hellman (10) . Recently, Ortega and Mellors (13) suggested that intrinsic germinal center cells degenerated after secreting gamma globulin and were phagocytized by tingible body macrophages . The identification of tingible bodies as small lymphocytes rests on indirect evidence since stained nuclear debris viewed in the light micro-

Autoimmune disease and impaired uptake of apoptotic cells in MFG-E8-deficient mice.
Apoptotic cells expose phosphatidylserine and are swiftly engulfed by macrophages. Milk fat globule epidermal growth factor (EGF) factor 8 (MFG-E8) is a protein that binds to apoptotic cells by recognizing phosphatidylserine and that enhances the engulfment of apoptotic cells by macrophages. We report that tingible body macrophages in the germinal centers of the spleen and lymph nodes strongly ...
متن کاملAn electron microscope study of the disposition and fine structure of Mycobacterium lepraemurium in mouse spleen.
The techniques of ultrathin sectioning and electron microscopy have been applied to cultures or suspensions of mycobacteria (Brieger and Glauert, 1956; Toda et al., 1957; Shinohara et at., 1957; Shinohara et al., 1958). The provocative nature of the resultant observations was sufficient in itself to suggest the desirability of studying these organisms as they occur in tissues. This project seem...
متن کاملElectron microscopic observations on primary and serially passaged radiation-induced myeloid leukemias of the RF mouse.
RF mice with primary and passaged radiation-induced myeloid leukemia were ex amined with the electron microscope for the presence of virus particles. The spleen, liver, and bone marrow of nearly all such mice examined contained small numbers of these particles. In one of two animals in which other tissues (thymus, pancreas, salivary glands, lymph nodes, omentum, lung, and brain) were examined, ...
متن کاملAnatomy of germinal centers in mouse spleen, with special reference to "follicular dendritic cells"
Lymphocyte proliferation in germinal centers (GC's) is thought to be triggered by antigen retained extracellularly on the surface of special "dendritic" cells. The anatomy and function of these cells have not been studied directly or in detail. We therefore examined mouse spleen GC's developing in response to sheep erythrocyte stimulation. We found that distincitve "follicular dendritic cells" ...

Histopathological effects of different sublethal concentrations (1, 2 and 4 mg/l) of diazinon, an organophosphorus pesticide, on gill, liver, spleen and kidney of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were studied after 1, 7, 15, 30 and 45 days post-exposing fishes weighting 850 ± 155 g to the toxicant for 12 hours at 18-22ºC. In addition, tissues of nostril were examined for transmission electr...
